Saskaņā ar likumu „Par Latvijas Banku” Saeima Latvijas Bankas prezidentu amatā ievēl pēc ne mazāk kā 10 Saeimas deputātu ierosinājuma. Bankas prezidenta pilnvaru laiks ir seši gadi.

I.Rimšēvičs Latvijas Bankas prezidenta amatā ir kopš 2001.gada, un viņa pašreizējo pilnvaru termiņš beidzas šī gada 1.novembrī.
